Lab & Basket

Posted on Thu Aug 26, 2021 @ 12:45am by Captain Larisna Koralova & Lieutenant Penny Mc Taggard

Mission: Mission 1R - Vigilance Be Our Shield
Location: Chief Science Officer's Lab, Deck 7
Timeline: M1D1 1445 Hours

ON:-

-Science Lab-

Larisna hated that she had such little prep time with the crew, but she also knew that time was critical and that the crew would perform just fine. But it just struck her as slightly unprofessional of her, even if she had no control over it.

Her next stop after concluding the meeting with the Klingons and Gorn was to check in with the Chief Science Officer. There wouldn't be much in the way of research happening in this situation, but the various sensors would come in handy for coordinating this operation. They'd figure it out together, of course, Larisna had no doubt.

She stopped at the door to the Chief Science Officer's Laboratory and hit the door chime.

The last item to be unpacked was Penny's Chihuahua. The bug eyed nipping machine had been unsettled during the journey. This plus security guard putting their finger in between its eyes had freaked the creature out. McTaggard had tried twice to open the travel basket and twice Cara had tried to bite her. So Penny brought the basket to the science lab in the hope she could somehow find something to pacify the small creature.

Hearing the door chime Penny looked around.

“Come in,” She said.

Larisna walked in and looked around before approaching Penny and the mystery basket.

"Lieutenant, welcome aboard. Finally able to speak in person, though I'm afraid I won't be able to stay long. Circumstances put us on a timetable." Larisna said in greeting, "...some unfinished buisness?" She asked, gesturing to the basket.

As if he was listening Cara let out a high pitched bark. Penny gave the basket a gentle shove.

“Shhh yer wee beastie...sorry ma’am it’s my wee doggie Cara. The journey here unsettled him a bit. “ Penny said standing to attention. She then handed the CO a padd with her transfer orders.

“Lieutenant Penny McTaggard your new Chief Science Officer reporting for duty ma’am.” Penny said.

Larisna took it with a smile, "Poor little one. It's not always easy on them to move. Once we're underway, we should be back to a semi normal state to let him stretch his legs and get his bearings."

"As for your arrival, Lieutenant, welcome. I'd still like you at the staff meeting this evening, so when you get a moment, please get a status on how things are looking for the department." Larisna explained, "I'm afraid though that we're not doing any real exploring this time out, but you and your staff will still be invaluable in this situation. We're coordinating the evacuation of the remaining Federation civilians in the disputed region between Gorn and Klingon space, we'll jump in if needed, but otherwise, we're just in and out. Keeping an eye on the long range sensors will be key, we need to be able to respond to any unexpected complications."

"Hopefully, after this, we can get back to the buisness of exploration. I'm not looking for a shooting war, and I don't suspect you are either. So as long as things stick to plan and we don't run into any issues, that won't be the case at all." Larisna continued.

"I hate to be chucking you in the deep water so quick, but if you need any assistance, my door is always open, and so is Commander Malloy's. Any questions so far?"

Perhaps Cara had picked up on Penny's sudden changed in mood, for he stopped growling and drooped his head.

Penny was stunned. Klingons and Gorn, both violent warrior races. The thought that they were squaring off against each other gave her cold chills down her spine.

“So the science department will need to work closely with the security department?” Penny asked.

"Strategic Ops, actually. I felt it prudent to take some personnel versed in the big picture." Larisna replied, "We have the agreement of both sides to let us do our jobs, but it could get tense out there. Hopefully, the worst we get is some insults about our honor and spines." She said, smiling a little to lighten the mood.

This did not make Penny feel any happier. She had read about what happened to ' innocents ' that got caught up in wars. Klingons although honorable were known , once their blood was up to stab first and not be to bothered if it was friend or foe. As for the Gorns their weapons were brutal enough and did not distinguish between innocent and not.

" Well do not worry. The science department will be ready to assist when the time comes. Although to be honest there is not much we can do. Except help monitor the situation. Although I do know of a good scale ointment that may help. Should we have to deal with any injured Gorns." Penny said.

"Well, let Dr. Hirsch know if you want to help with their efforts, but if this goes to plan, we should be in and out without much trouble." Larisna said, and approached the basket with the small dog, "We'd like to make Cara's first time on the Hornet a pleasant one." She said with a smile.

Penny made a face as the basket seemed to shake with anger.

“ Some canine tranquilises may come in handy.” Penny said

Larisna shook her head slightly with an amused laugh, "At ease, little one." She turned to Penny, "Just needs a moment to get acclimated, I think. Always a big thing moving from one place to the next." She then headed for the door, "If you need anything, my door is usually open. Staff meeting is later this evening, give you a chance to meet the rest of the senior staff."

Penny gave a nod.

“ Then there is not a second to lose ma’am.” Penny said as the basket started to jump. She gave a small laugh as she clamped a hand on it.
