Mission 1R - Vigilance Be Our Shield
Location: Primary Engineering
A proper engine room, at least for the company she kept. This was nice, though, to be back in an element she recognized as familiar. She knew the workings, she knew the design, but she also knew that she was still a visitor here for the moment. Once she met the chief, learned the modified specs of the reactor system, and knew what it was kitted to do only then would she consider herself part of the team. So, with luck, by tomorrow.
"I'm looking for the chief." she asked one of the engineers on deck, a quick glance at the neck to make sure she wasn't actually talking to the chief. With all the information needed at the collar, she felt like a vampire looking from neck to neck.
"I'm over here Lieutenant," E'Lor said waving her hand while looking at what she called the pool table. She was busily going over the specs and diagrams of the warp core and the magnetic constrictors. Looking up at the approaching foot steps, "How can I help you Lieutenant......?" she asked.
Broad boots closed the distance to the speaker, with Rei joining E'Lor at the pool table. "It's more how I can help you, Chief. I'm your new assistant." the rabbitess said, pride in her posting easily picked up. "Rei Yamashi." she introduced herself. No offered hand, no human gesture... as the number of humans at that table was currently zero.
E'Lor almost fainted, regaining her composure quickly, Lt. Yamashi, welcome to Main Engineering. You are familiar with the Nebula class?" E'Lor asked. This was a species she had only heard about but never met until now.
Ears up, shoulders back. This was a test. An interview. This... she could handle. "Thank you. The Nebula class, jack of all trades craft. We don't have anything like it back home. Very ambitious design. Precursor to the Monarch series, which is what this class is. Never served on one, but I'm familiar with the mark six intermix unit, the series four matter and anti-matter containment pods, and the revision three structural field that its reactor uses as a base. If you've made any modifications or updates since installation I'll have to familiarize myself with them." she offered, a touch of a resume for the chief's aptitude. "I graduated from the Ts'usu Academy of Advanced Applications with nine marks, attended the Dalacari Science and Research Divisional and made five dots. Between that, I served my required three years in the Ts'usugi Navy."
"You'll find it hard to surprise me, Ma'am, but I'm looking forward to it."
"Well, you will do fine here in engineering. For now, there are no problems but that could change in a hurry," E'Lor finished saying as she offered her hand to the rabbitess. "Welcome to the Hornet" she added.
"Thank you." and she looked down at the offered hand, before bringing her shine'less eyes up to E'Lor. "I... we don't do that." she did hold her hand out, though instead of the open hand of the human greeting, it was a simple fist. The handshake, a gesture of deal making, of simple agreements, or of grasping at the hand of another in conquest.
This was a simpler gesture. A simple fist, held out in a non-threatening fashion. "We place a higher value on contact than most other races. Handshakes... aren't our thing. At Starfleet academy, when the other cadets figured that out, they taught me an older gesture. Not as old as the handshake, but one that was slightly more culturally sensitive, and easier to perform. A ... Bump, they called it. Both parties make a fist, and then... bump them."
"Ah...understood. Well how does she look so far?," E'Lor asked her newest recruit. E'Lor was used to strange customs but this was going to take some getting used to.
Protocol fulfilled, Rei looked around at the engine pit. The looming reactor pillar, the panels and consoles. "It's bigger than any ship I've served in thus far. Roomy, spacious almost. Comfortable. The Dalacari would love it. I feel like I could drown in here and it would still take help ten minutes to find me." she spoke her mind, honest and direct. "Federation designs always favored spacious interiors. It's comfortable to them."
"It's very nice, despite." she turned her attention back to her department chief. "She looks new. That'll change quickly, from new to proven. Lose the shine of pristine, and gain the glow of experience."
"Yes that she will. Her systems will be tested and tried and we will learn all her quirks and twists out among the stars, so let's get her started," E'Lor said smiling.
Rei gave a nod of acknowledgement, "Yes, let us begin."
