Who Left This Here?

Posted on Tue Feb 1, 2022 @ 2:03am by Captain Larisna Koralova & Lieutenant Rei Yamashi & Lieutenant Penny Mc Taggard & Lieutenant Commander Kaedon Draesni & Lieutenant Jaro Antos

Mission: Mission 2 - A World With A Bluer Sun
Location: J25-418Y System
Timeline: M2D01 1845 Hours

The swirling maelstrom that occupied a part of J25-418Y was beautiful but in the same way that a distant storm was - a wonder to look at until you were caught inside. It looked nothing like the Bajoran wormhole, more like a swirling angry mass of blues, whites, and yellows with flashes in between at random. Larisna leaned forward in her chair to take it in.

Penny sat at the science station and looked at the view screen. One of the reasons she joined Starfleet was now in front of them. The galaxy was full of curious wonders like the wormhole before them. As a science officer she would have the chance to explore and analyse.

"Helm, keep us at a safe distance from this. I don't think this is going to take us on a pleasant trip to the Delta or Gamma Quadrant." Larisna said. "Sakkar, McTaggart - analysis?"

Antos nodded at the Captain's command. She did not need to tell him twice. The gravimetric waves around the wormhole was significant and would likely significantly damage if not destroy the Hornet if they came any closer without any additional precautions.

Like many of his colleagues, he was awestruck by the wormhole, although he suspected none of them were wondering if there was any connection to the Bajoran wormhole, which his people believed to be the Celestial Temple of the Prophets. His thoughts were always the same when it came to wormholes. There were so many unknown mysteries around them, and even more mysteries surrounding the Celestial Temple and the Prophets- or the alien entities that his people referred to as Prophets.

Penny ran her hands over the science console. The data that started to come through alarmed her.

“ Oh my. The sensors are picking up intense gravimetric disturbances emanating from wormhole. Neutrinos seem to be in a constant state of flux. Verteron nodes don’t seem to be naturalising chaotic eddies of static and electrical discharge. From the readings so far……this is wormhole has been artificially created…oh my. There’s something in there…” Penny reported.

"Penny scan for chroniton particles I want to make sure this wormhole isn't temporal in nature." Amanda asked.

Antos sighed at the pronouncement that the wormhole was artificially created. He realized that there was a part of him that had actually been wondering if this was why his Orb encounter had instructed him to stay in Starfleet and abandon his plan to retire, marry Aiko and settle on Bajor. It would seem those answers remained as elusive as ever.

"That's odd," Antos replied looking at his sensor readings, which confirmed what Penny was reporting. "I'm reading a ship, possibly two...hard to say with all the sensor distortion. But there are is a distress signal from the surface the computer is identifying as belonging to...you are not going to believe this, an NX class starship...the USS Atlantis"

At the mention of the old Earth vessel’s name, Draesni immediately set to work. He turned to the nearby console and began pulling up what information he could from the ship’s library computer. “Atlantis NX-05,” he read aloud as the words appeared on the workstation to his right, “It says here the ship was declared lost with all hands during the war with the Romulans.”

"The Atlantis? That was an old NX class starship equipped with one of the early Archer warp 5 engines." Amanda stated.

That fact alone did not surprise Draesni. Although he was not quite as familiar with that period of Earth’s history, he knew it had been a chaotic time, one in which much of what he and his contemporaries took for granted had still been largely unknown. The Coalition of Planets was barely a few years old, and United Earth’s space forces not much older than that. New starships were rushed into production, untested technologies thrown into the field, all against an enemy that could shroud itself behind cloaks of invisibility. It was little wonder a ship like the Atlantis had gone missing and was presumed lost.

"Bridge, this is Engineering." came a familiar, if relatively new voice. "As a precaution I'm going to be bolstering the inertial dampeners just in case the accretion aperture decides to shift. I'll reallocate from completely unimportant systems first. Every unused replicator in every unused set of quarters, mostly. Just promise that if we do get caught, you approach from the front instead of the side, and if we wind up in the Delta, I'll show you all around." there was a smirk in her voice, humor in her tone, but her deeds rang true. Her mission was to protect this ship and everyone on it. Right now that was simple: Inertial dampening tech. She cut the comm to the bridge, then looked at her engineering crew. Her predecessor stated that she only worked with the best, but how much she actually used their talents had yet to be seen.

"Who's an expert on inertia?" she offered, a soft smirk creeping up on the features of the diehard KINETIC fan. One of the crew raised his hand, "I am, ma'am." and she gave him a nod. "Vickers, is it?" and when he confirmed, "If worst to worst, can we push these units beyond their safe limits?" and Vickers gave a nod, "Yes and no, ma'am. Yes we can, no we shouldn't. Not for long. If we had to, to save the ship, we could push half of the units to one ten, while lowering the other half to ninety, then oscillate them back and forth to create a field that's not as smooth but a little better at holding us together."

"How long would that give us, in theory?" and the result came back after the engineer gave some thought, "Five minutes, absolute tops. Then we start burning out units." and Rei gave a nod, "Keep it as a backup. Keep an eye on the hull pressure, and above all else, nothing stops the power." the engineering team gave an enthusiastic nod of agreement and returned to their task.

Larisna frowned at the information. Not least because there would almost certainly be extra paperwork from the Department of Temporal Investigations and a visit from agents who took themselves too seriously in the ship's future now.

"What about the planet? Is there anything there? A civilization? A crash site? Anything?" Larisna asked.

Penny looked at the scanner data again. This time from the planet. This was not easy given the proximity of the wormhole. She was struck by how blue the land masses seemed to be. But that may be due to the wormholes emanations. If you were on the surface the sun would appear blue.

“ I’m not picking up much due to that.” Penny said pointing at view screen.” However there does see to be rather a lot of tectonic instability. Especially in areas nearest to wormhole. There also seems to be something else. But I kenna get a clear reading. It could be anything from artificial made to natural.” She explained

"What about radiation, is there anything that would prevent us from beaming down and having a first hand look?" Amanda asked.

Penny ran her hands over the science console. She checked over the readings and nodded.

“ Despite the influence from the wormhole. It should be safe to beam down to the planet.”Penny reported

"Okay." Larisna stood up, "Commander, put together an away team. Investigate the signal's origin and report back. We all know the rules regarding possible time travelers, but whatever is going on, that's a good starting point for answers. Mister Jaro, try to keep us away from the gravimetric disturbances in the meantime."

"Aye Caption Amanda said. Lt Antos, Lt Mctaggart, Lt Yamashi and Dr Aereen and I will go." Amanda added.

"Aye Captain," Antos replied. He was keeping a close eye on the gravimetric field and ensuring that the ship was staying beyond its reach.

Penny hoped she would be picked for the away team. She was very interested to see the wormholes effect on the planet. As head of the science department it was not a done deal of course. Usually a less senior officer would go. But it was not every day you witnessed a planet. So close to a wormhole like this. For once protocol would have to be side stepped.

"Lt Antos, Lt Mctaggart, Lt Yamashi and Dr Aereen and I will go." Amanda replied.

There was a certain way a Starfleet officer should behave. On hearing good news it was severely frowned at , to run around the bridge cheering or to shout yes and fist pump the air. As a department head you where expected to show an example to those in your department. So Penny simply nodded.

From within the depths of the Engineering section, a pair of long ears perked up at the call. The rabbitess attached to those ears turned to her crew, and designated her assistant as next in line for the proverbial throne. "Keep the ship up and running. Chief advisory on this is Vickers, they're the highest marked expert on inertial fields." and then she tapped her badge to answer the call to arms, "This is Yamashi, I'm on my way to the transporter room."

Time to earn those koku.

"Very well. Stay in contact. And remember - if anyone down there is a temporally displaced person, they're behind the curve by about two and a half centuries. The Atlantis was declared lost during the first major conflict with the Romulans but the Federation was still a lofty idea." Larisna said as relief crew took over the stations being vacated.
